Mercy Medical Center’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program provides a comprehensive team approach program intended to achieve the best quality lifestyle for people with heart problems.

The program is designed primarily (but not exclusively) for individuals who have had:

  • a heart attack
  • coronary bypass surgery
  • stable angina
  • coronary angioplasty
  • valve replacement surgery
  • heart/lung transplant

The goals of the program are to help each patient gradually increase physical capacity through exercise and to reduce risk of future heart disease.  The Cardiac Rehab staff works with individuals who need help quitting smoking, changing eating habits, or increasing their activity levels.

A regular program of physical exercise can make a significant difference in the health of a person with heart disease.  Medically-guided exercise therapy can improve the performance of the heart and the efficiency of the cardiovascular system.  In Phase II of the program, there is continuous monitoring of the patient’s heart rate and cardiac rhythm while exercising on a treadmill, stationary bicycle, stairs, or rowing machine.
